Enlightenment is only a secret because of misunderstanding. Misunderstanding will happen because the mind is involved - but it can be minimized and you can get enlightened.
You may have heard many things about Enlightenment but none of these things have led to your enlightenment.
Why not?
Because Enlightenment is not a state of mind nor a way of thinking. It cannot be conveyed or captured in words. It is an absence of thought, a state of no-mind.
Before thought, Enlightenment existed and after thought, Enlightenment exists. Enlightenment, of course, also exists during thought but that is not so easy to understand when a seeker is blinded by erroneous beliefs.
Fortunately, misunderstanding is not an obstacle to enlightenment otherwise neither I, Douglas Harding, Ramana Maharshi nor the Buddha would ever have become enlightened.
There is a concept that "enlightenment is a secret". This state of secrecy is not intentional. It is not necessary to view your situation as a cosmic joke, the game of life, life's classroom, divine amnesia or that the Ascended Masters preventing you from accessing powers for our own protection.
Glib answers like "it just is" or "it's all Consciousness playing" are neither good nor bad but maybe intentionally frustrating or just plain lazy and unclear because the speaker has not bothered to investigate further.
The realisation of enlightenment is beyond the reach of words. It is a perceptual shift. The shift in perception happens when thinking is de-emphasized and present moment and body awareness comes to the forefront of everyday awareness.
