You are going to learn to use your real spiritual tools and to stop relying on patent lies, fantasies and errors gained from the pseudo-spiritual marketplace.
As a young seeker frequenting the burgeoning esoteric marketplace I was inadequately prepared to assess, handle or discard every piece of unbidden and potentially dangerous advice spouted by wannabe magicians, sorcerers, psychics and guru. It was a wonder that I escaped with my health and sanity let alone to get Enlightened 30 years later. I guess I was lucky.
As a spiritual seeker you only have your own discrimination to fall back upon. The spiritual teacher/guide should sharpen your discrimination not dull it. The spiritual path is not the sort of thing to be traversed after only a cursory read of the first book which falls in your hands. You have to know why you are seeking, what you are seeking and which tools are naturally available to you.
Unfortunately, you probably downed those tools, because you were told to follow some teaching in blind faith. Now is the time to pick up your inner tools of awareness and purpose and to use them as nature intended. It is also an excellent time to throw out what does not work.
Learn how to learn by using spiritual interactions as revelatory experiences. Discover where experienced seekers go wrong and make beginner mistakes. Take what works and discard everything superfluous and unnecessary.
