Once you find that just-so-right spiritual teacher, the kind who flips the lid off your over-baked pot noodle and lets the steam out, your next issue is how to encounter him.
The trouble is you don't have a model for relating to a spiritual teacher. Forget about those glassy-eyed, cheesy grinning, straight backed devotees that festoon traditional guru meets like Christmas tinsel - you don't want to follow their lead - otherwise you will be back in Ignoranceville, population 7 billion.
The spiritual teacher is just another being with a small "b", no need to do the eyes like pesetas staring act, it won't help you understand anything, not even a little bit, unless looking like Woody Allen is your natural state.
And while the teacher-student relationship has elements of parent, friend, confidant and intimate - he or she is none of these to you.
An Enlightened Teacher's ability is partially discovered every time you have a stunning revelatory realisation, experience or breakthrough. But it might just be your own efforts that got you there. You can never be too sure.
The Enlightened Teacher's brilliance is fully revealed when you yourself become Enlightened, at which point your own Awakening Consciousness eclipses your teacher's perceived state and leaves him in the dark (relatively speaking). The life of an Enlightenment Teacher is shorter lived than a fruit fly. But just so it is! We are not here to serve ourselves and what we deliver is not for personal use.
Let me help you clear up any awkward, diffident or mistaken adulatory teenage notions which you have about gurudom so that you can can get on with the real business of getting Enlightened in the most direct, simplest way possible. Whilst an Enlightened Teachers is worthy of respect it is not by virtue title or poetic hagiography but by the miracles their contact has wrought in your life and the precise cutting, cognitive crap clearing, raised awareness which they bring to your roulette table of life.
